Welcome to Nursery!

The curriculum for children at West Hill is guided by the ‘Early Years Foundation Stage Statutory Framework’, which sets standards for the learning, development and care of children from birth to 5 years old.

There are three prime areas:-

-Communication and Language

-Physical Development

-Personal, Social and Emotional development

These 3 prime areas strengthened and applied through the 4 specific areas

-Literacy

-Mathematics

- Understanding the World

- Expressive Arts and Design.

Children will be involved in a mixture of adult led, child initiated and whole class activities throughout the week, based in classrooms or outside.

Children will have a healthy daily snack of fruit and a choice of water or milk.

Homework

Children's book bags need to be in school every day, and parents and carers should listen to their child read for a few minutes every day, and write in their reading diaries. We will listen to the children read as often as possible and change their books when they are confident with them. At different points of the year we introduce reading challenges, such as reading to Gerry the Girrafe, to keep the children enthusiastic about reading.

Children are set a weekly homework task, in their homework books every Wednesday which is due in school on Mondays.

We like to celebrate all our children's achievements - whether made at home or at school.  We love to hear about the things they enjoy, it helps us to create a ‘well-rounded’ picture of who each person really is. ‘Star Moments’ can tell us about anything of interest that families like to share. For example, children’s favourite bedtime story, the day their first tooth fell out, how they built a tall lego tower, got an award or prize in a club they attend and many more besides! Each child is unique. What he/she enjoys doing or achieves for the first time is personal to them and should be recognised whenever it takes place, regardless of when their friends did something similar.

Children have a log on for 'RM easimaths' and 'Bug Club' which can be found in homework books. If you have any issues or questions about this please ask a member of staff.
