Year 1

Welcome to Year One.

Miss Curtis - 1C

Miss Jones – 1J

Mrs Wood - Teaching Assistant

Mrs Lloyd - Teaching Assistant

In Year One:

Year one is a big year for us as we are introduced to the National Curriculum. We learn the skills and knowledge we need in the curriculum through exciting stories and themes. We learn English, Maths and Phonics every day and build up to whole class activities just like the rest of the school!

In Year One we stick together and work our hardest, following the West Hill way! We like being good friends and helping one another out. We never give up when we get stuck and we ask our friends to help us. When we do something extra special we get monster points!
 Curriculum Topics
In Year One, we cover the following topics:
*Superheroes (Aut 1)
*Paws, Claws and Whiskers (Aut2)
*Bright Lights, Big City (Spring1)
*Moon Zoom (Spring2)
*Enchanted Woodland (Summer1)
*Dinosaur Planet (Summer2)
 Homework
Homework is sent home on Wednesdays and is due back in school the following Monday. Each week we complete a piece of Maths or English homework – practising different skills and doing fun activities. Each piece of homework should take no longer than half an hour. We also include lots of speaking and listening ideas to support learning outside of the classroom.
 Spellings
Spellings to practise at home are sent out each half-term. These link to curriculum requirements as well as the sounds we are learning.

 Reading at home -
It is a requirement to read with your child 3 x a week and record this in the reading diaries. In Year One we aim to promote independence, so when your child has finished with a book, please state this in the diary and remind your child that morning to change their reading book themselves.
 PE Info
PE takes place every Wednesday and every other Tuesday. Please leave PE kit in school – it will come home at the end of each half-term. Make sure long hair is tied back and earrings are removed.
Parent Helpers
If you are interested in coming in to school to volunteer for a couple of hours we would love to have the help! Please let the office know.
Phonics
Phonics is crucial to ensuring we become competent and fluent readers and extra practice at home really helps! If you would like some ideas on how to practice phonics please do not hesitate to ask us. We particularly like phonics play (search this on google) and Geraldine Giraffe (search this on youtube).
A phonics workshop will be held nearer to the phonics screening check, which takes place in June.
