Year 1

Welcome to Year One.

Miss Curtis - 1C

Miss Jones – 1J

Mrs Skinner - Teaching Assistant

Mrs Lloyd - Teaching Assistant

In Year One-

Year one is a big year for us as we are introduced to the National Curriculum. We learn the skills and knowledge we need in the curriculum through exciting stories and themes. We learn English, Maths and Phonics every day and build up to whole class activities just like the rest of the school!

In Year One we stick together and work our hardest, following the West Hill way! We like being good friends and helping one another out. We never give up when we get stuck and we ask our friends to help us. When we do something extra special we get a hush bug in our jar, once our jar is full of hush bugs we get a class treat.

 Curriculum Topics

In Year One, we cover the following topics:

*The Enchanted Woodland (Aut 1)

*Moon Zoom (Aut2)

*Perfect Paddington and Picturesque Places (Spring1)

*Bug’s life (Spring2)

*Under the Sea (Summer1)

*Twisted Tales (Summer2)

 Homework

Homework is sent home on Wednesdays and is due back in school the following Monday. Each week we complete a piece of Maths and English homework – practising different skills and doing fun activities. Each piece of homework should take no longer than half an hour. We also include lots of speaking and listening ideas to support learning outside of the classroom.

 Spellings

Spellings are sent home alongside homework. Different words are tested each week on a Monday; please help your child to practise these. Look out for the spellings on a Wednesday in your homework folder.

Bug Club/ RM Easimaths

Log ins can be found in the reading diaries - if possible please use as often as possible to support learning in school.

 Reading at home -

It is a requirement to read with your child 3 x a week and record this in the reading diaries. In Year One we aim to promote independence, so when your child has finished with a book, please state this in the diary and remind your child that morning to change their reading book themselves.

 PE Info

PE takes place every Wednesday and every other Thursday. Please leave PE kit in school – it will come home at the end of each half-term. Make sure long hair is tied back and earrings are removed.

Additional info – including trips

Show and Tell – Tuesday afternoon. Please label items with names and do not be disappointed if you don’t get to show and tell every week – we only have a short amount of time for this session and usually lots to show!

Trips

Cannock Chase Museum - We explore toys of the past as part of our Paddington topic. The museum is a very exciting day where we play with old toys and even make our own doll.

Tesco ‘farm to fork’ – As part of our Bugs life topic we visit Tesco to learn all about where food comes from. We even get to taste different foods like the very hungry caterpillar and make our own cereal!

Parent Helpers

If you are interested in coming in to school to volunteer for a couple of hours we would love to have the help! Please let the office know.

Phonics

Phonics is crucial to ensuring we become competent and fluent readers and extra practice at home really helps! If you would like some ideas on how to practice phonics please do not hesitate to ask us. We particularly like phonics play (search this on google) and Geraldine Giraffe (search this on youtube).
